Chimney Sweeping & Cleaning

Thorough creosote and soot removal for wood, gas, and pellet chimney systems, with dust containment and a clean, swept flue you can verify before we leave.

What's Included in a Chimney Sweep

A professional sweep removes soot and creosote from the flue, smoke chamber, and firebox using rotary brush-and-whip systems sized to your specific flue diameter and shape (round, square, or oval). We use HEPA-filtered vacuum containment connected at the cleanout or firebox opening, so debris doesn't end up in your living space. Drop cloths go down before any tools come out.

Sweeping alone doesn't tell the whole story — every sweep we perform includes a visual check of the smoke shelf, damper, and firebox for cracks, loose mortar, or damage that a cleaning alone won't fix. If something needs a closer look, we'll walk you through it before recommending a full Level 1 or Level 2 inspection.

Signs Your Chimney Needs Sweeping

How Often You Actually Need One

The Chimney Safety Institute of America and NFPA 211 both recommend at least one inspection per year for every chimney, fireplace, and vent — sweeping frequency follows from what that inspection finds. Households burning wood regularly through a Maine heating season typically need a sweep every year; homes with gas inserts or occasional wood use may go a bit longer, but skipping the annual inspection isn't recommended for any fuel type, since creosote builds up even with a small amount of burning.

Wood, Gas & Pellet Systems

Wood-burning flues accumulate creosote fastest and need the most frequent attention, especially if the wood burned wasn't well-seasoned. Gas appliances produce far less soot but still need flue and vent checks for corrosion and blockage. Pellet stove venting needs its own cleaning schedule since pellet ash is fine and can pack into vent elbows over a season.

Bundle and save time: Most homeowners schedule their annual sweep and inspection together in early fall, ahead of the first cold snap. See our winter chimney safety checklist for a full pre-season list.
