How Often Should You Sweep Your Chimney?

The short answer most homeowners want is a single number: "every X months." The honest answer is that sweeping frequency depends far more on how a chimney is used than on a fixed calendar interval — but there is one part of this that is a fixed rule, and it's worth separating the two.

The Fixed Rule: Annual Inspection

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and NFPA 211 both call for at least one inspection per year for every chimney, fireplace, and vent, regardless of how much it was used. This isn't optional guidance reserved for heavy burners — it applies even to a fireplace that saw only a handful of fires all winter, because some chimney problems (cracked crowns, animal entry, liner deterioration) develop independent of use. See our full chimney inspection page for what a Level 1 inspection actually covers.

The Variable Part: Sweeping Frequency

Whether a sweep is needed follows from what that annual inspection finds — specifically, how much creosote has built up and what stage it's in. A few patterns we see consistently in Portland-area homes:

Why "Once a Year, No Matter What" Isn't Quite Right

Two households both burning wood "regularly" can build creosote at very different rates depending on wood moisture content, burn technique, and flue sizing relative to the appliance. Burning unseasoned wood or running a fire damped-down and smoldering produces more creosote per fire than a hot, well-ventilated burn — sometimes enough that a household burning less often still needs more frequent sweeping. This is exactly why the inspection, not a generic calendar rule, is what actually determines sweep timing. Our creosote buildup dangers post covers what the different creosote stages look like and why stage matters more than a fixed schedule.

Signs You Shouldn't Wait for Your Next Scheduled Visit

If any of these apply, don't wait for a "someday" appointment — see our chimney sweeping & cleaning page for what's involved, or call directly.
