"Inspection" isn't a single, one-size service — the industry defines three distinct levels, each triggered by different circumstances. Knowing which one applies to your situation helps set the right expectations before a technician arrives.
A Level 1 inspection covers all readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and appliance connection, using no special tools or component removal. This is the right level for a chimney that's been performing normally, with the same fuel type and appliance as the year before. It covers the flue for creosote and obstruction, the damper for proper operation, the firebox and smoke chamber for cracks, and exterior masonry, crown, and cap for visible damage. Full detail on our inspection service page.
A Level 2 includes everything in a Level 1, plus a video scan of the entire flue interior using a specialized camera, along with inspection of accessible attic, crawl space, and basement areas where the chimney passes through. A Level 2 is required when:
The camera is what makes a Level 2 valuable — it catches cracked flue tiles, gaps, and liner separation that a flashlight-only Level 1 inspection can miss entirely. See signs of a damaged chimney liner for what that kind of hidden damage looks like when it does surface.
A Level 3 inspection involves removing sections of the chimney structure or interior wall material to access areas not visible during a Level 1 or 2. This is typically recommended only when a Level 2 video scan turns up evidence suggesting a serious hidden hazard — for example, indications of a void behind a wall, or suspected fire damage to nearby framing. We'll always walk you through the specific finding driving a Level 3 recommendation before proceeding, since it's more disruptive and costly than the first two levels.

| Selling or buying a home | Level 2 |
| After a chimney fire or lightning strike | Level 2 |
| Changing fuel type or appliance | Level 2 |
| Level 2 found suspected hidden structural damage | Level 3 |
